| Recording at Glen Murlene Studios |
| 03.19.04 (11:17 am) [edit] |
Well that was a great weekend session indeed. We all pitched at Glen Murlene on Friday afternoon in high spirits, looking forward to some solid playing and loafing around. The two, it turns out are not mutually exclusive. After the engineers sorted out the recording gear from their navels. We were under way.
The creative muse hit with the force of a Super Nova, though Mat claims the beer was spiked with something, I disavow all knowledge of that. It felt like a natural high pulling chords and riffs and words outta the air. I think our planets were aligned or something. Can you tell I'm JAZZED!!!
We layed down tracks for 3 new tunes. We have "I Suck", "If I Had My Time Back" and "Children of the Sea". The first one is really a ball of fluff, with a great catchy tune that will stick in your head much the same way as velcro to wool, or egg to plates, or price tags to, well everything, man I hate price tags that leave gummy gluey crap behind.
A writing credit should go to Jacky A. for donating the title and first 4 chords, not to mention the inspiration for the song. We luv ya Jacks, keep plucking you'll get there some day.
My favourite line from the tune (we'll post soon to the website, after we find our webmaster, haven't seen her have you?) is "I'm like a bottom dwelling filter fish sucking sludge" Al Aims And Achieves Aliteration.....
"If I had my Time Back" started off life as a kick ass riff from the ever so nimble, though gnarled, fingers of Mat Shoal. Delivered, as usual, via voicemail. "Hey Al, put lyrics to this." Al, of course, graciously obliges after few libations and a walk around the park with the riff copied to his i-pod. The words usually come pretty quickly. I think they were completed as CNN explored the depths of the Enron and Worldcom scandals so there may be a wiff of that.
"Children of the Sea" is a "different kettle of fish" as the locals say here on the east coast of Canada, no Idea where it comes from but I like the line all the same. Look for some east coast music influence on this one. I actually borrowed a famous fiddle called the "Lady Bluenose" to capture the "kitchen party" spirit, called ceilidh, pronouned "kaylee" You've got to attend one some day. I highly reccommend it. People here party like the liquor stores are closing for good.
Before I go I must tell you about Jessie. You cannot record at Glen Murlene without experiencing Jessie. He's the owners dog and seems to be on guard duty 24/7. You cannot play an E chord, crack a Guinness or take a dump without Jessie "supervising" your every move. He's damn cute though. There's a picture of him in my photo album at TALHSOMA. http://www.talhsoma.com/als_a...

To clarify - I'm telling everyone that I know that "Children of the Sea" sprang from an idea that has been in my head for five years. Since I've been in Canada for less than a year, and on the East Coast for even less than that, the facts don't support my assertions. Facts, schmacks...it makes good liner notes!!

Before any rumors get started, involving dogs or other mammals, what Al failed to state was that "I Suck" was the phrase often used by a friend (Jackie) who we were showing how to play guitar. After the umteenth outburst over a failed barre chord, we challenged her to write a song saying how much she sucked. She came up with the first few chords - then, being the jerks we are, we included a couple she couldn't play yet, just to make her work. We recorded it during some down time in the studio (we engineered it ourselves), with many beers, and lots of laughter.

I was looking for a lift today, not the kind in a car or elevator, but the energy booster type. Sliced cucumber and tomaotes and a few reads of Talhsoma, seems to have done it for me. WARNING LABEL STATES: May contain traces of energy, caution folks, wipe the drool from your cheek, sit up and try and wake up from your cubicle slumber.
And for the record, in case there is ever one, yes it is I who was the butt end of the I Suck tale of woe - damn those bar chords and damn Al an Matt!
Love to All
